DESIGN GAMES ABOUT REAL-WORLD ISSUES AFFECTING YOUR COMMUNITY

The G4C Student Challenge is a citywide competition that invites Los Angeles middle and high school students to create games about issues impacting their communities. Winning games are celebrated at an awards ceremony where students receive recognition, awesome prizes and career-oriented experiential opportunities.

CHALLENGE TIMELINE

JULY 2019

TEACHER APPLICATIONS OPEN

Teachers apply to join the year-long program.

AUGUST 2019

Selection of Teachers

Teacher applications are vetted; new teachers are accepted into program and returning teachers rejoin.

OCTOBER 2019

Challenge Launch

Teachers are trained during 2 days of professional development; game courses launch in schools.

JANUARY 2020

Competition Launch

Competition opens for submissions; students have two months to submit their games.

FEBRUARY 2020

Teacher Meet-Up

Educators receive additional training and prep for the competition.

APRIL 2020

Competition Deadline & Jury Evaluation

Submission portal closes; games are evaluated by industry professionals.

JUNE 2020

Virtual Awards Ceremony & Prizes

Student finalists showcase their games and winners are revealed at a culminating Awards Ceremony.

MAP OF COHORT SCHOOLS IN LOS ANGELES

Over 50 teachers from Los Angeles were selected to receive training to run game design courses at their schools. Students in the courses are learning how to use Scratch and Unity through the Mouse Impact Game Design curriculum.

If you’re looking for even more opportunities to do cool projects with technology, here are a few more teen programs offered in Los Angeles.

CODEREV  – Tech camps and 8 weeks classes that focus on STEM learning.  Students create games, websites, apps, and more!

DIY GIRLS  – Teaching girls technology and engineering after school and during the summer.

iD TECH – Offering camps and year-round online coding courses for kids.

iURBAN TEEN  – A STEM and arts education program that brings together underrepresented teens and young adults for career exploration and mentoring.

THE CLUBHOUSE NETWORK – An out-of-school learning environment where youth can develop tech skills with mentors through a variety of programs. 

UCODE – Classes on creating websites, apps, and games.

ZANIAC – Several programs are offered after school and during the summer to teach students K-8 math and technology through project-based learning.  Programs run through the office in Santa Monica.
